Left: rue des Grands Augustins, undated but close to 1868. This street is in the 6th arrondisse- ment, between St. Germain and the Seine. It looks remarkably similar today. In fact, just before the archway on the left is today home of Roger Grenouille, a restaurant specializing in frogs legs. On the left down at the corner is rue Christine, home of several additional good eateries today.

Right: rue des Ecoles (1868), which runs parallel to Blvd. St. Germain and runs into St. Michel, where it ends. This view is looking west. Down on the left is musee de Moyen Ages, or the Cluny Museum. This location is in the 5th arrondissement. Charles Marville is the photographer, and the book, Le Nouveau Paris is edited by Philippe Mellot.

The public urinals (for men) are redesigned. They came to be semi-enclosed kiosks on the sidewalk. These are long gone from Paris. I think I recall them from Paris in the 1960s. The last one I encountered was in Strasbourg in the 1980's. Today the only free public (as in officially maintained) pissior in Paris I'm aware of  is behind Notre Dame. Charles Marville is the photographer, and the book, Le Nouveau Paris is edited by Philippe Mellot.

More broadly:

The first tricycles were made in France. (CHF)

Miners demonstrations in Charleroi. (AF)

The skeleton of a Cro-Magnon man is found at Eyzies de Tayac in the Dordogne. I think today this is Les Eyzies, a delightful village close to several caves open for visits. It is also home to two great Michelin rated restaurants. (AF)
