The Great Chess Battle

Several people have suggested to me, on several different occations, that Dagorhir should have a great big live chess combat. So here it is, the rules for such an activity.

The Players
Each team get's the following pieces:

Both of the special moves count:
Em passant: a pawn may automaticaly capture a pawn that moves two steps while in a diagonal location from the first.
Castleing: The king and rook may trade places if neither have moved previously, and neither is in danger.

Since we don't have enough people for a full chess set, each team get's a king, queen, bishop, knight, rook and a pawn, maybe 2 pawns.

Ideally, this would use a BIG checkered area, or at least one that was marked off. Alternatively, we can just pretend we have checkers, which might be more fun.
There is the possibility of laying out ropes on the edges of the playing field, to indicate the dimensions of the board.

Here is the catch. There are 3 phases: command, move, and attack.
The herald calls out each phase, which lasts for 30 seconds.
During the command phase, the king orders his "pieces" to move in a particular fashion, or to stay still, or to move freely.
During the movement phase, each piece moves according to their directions.
During the attack phase, pieces may attack others who are within weapon range. Remember, you're only fighting for 30 seconds.

May also want to add in a healing phase so that all survivors are healed after combat, but it may be more fun this way.
I think it would be fun to put a bowman on each side to shoot. Maybe the queen. ;-)
