One of the largest problems most groups seem to have with staves is figuring out how to build them, and how to fit them into the rules. First I will address construction: After much debate, Talinor decided to build two staves to try out. Peice of 3/4" Sch 80 pvc pipe was used as the core, cut to be 1 ft shorter than the desired length. First the ends were capped in the traditional duct tape. Second, the entire length was covered in 1/2" thick peice of camping pad, with two spots left open for the hands (3 peices, the two ends and the middle). Third: the camping pad was wrapped with 2" thick open cell foam. The open cell foam is then covered with another layer of camping pad foam (so now you have three sections, all a sandwich of camping, open cell, camping). Lastly, the ends were capped with a stabbing tip. Now for fitting the staff into the rules... First of all, the ends obviously count as green. The middle peice between the hands DOES NOT COUNT! It is padded for the protection of the weilder and their opponents! Second, the ends of the staff DO NOT COUNT AS RED!! THEY COUNT AS BLUE!! The reasons for this should be obvious with a little consideration. First of all RED shots are designed to break items. Lets consider this. So you are a medieval warrior walking around with an iron banded wooden sheild. You meet a fearsome warrior weilding a two inch oak staff. This mighty warrior builds a mighty swing and hits your sheild. Then he does it again. Consider this: your sheild would not be broken, instead of looking down at your shattered, broken sheild, you look at this warrior and laugh your a** off as you beat the tar out of him with your sword/flail etc. Consider the same with armor. For this, a staff would prove far more effective than against a sheild. However, for simplicities sake, the Talinor council has ruled that staffs shall be considered a blue/green weapon. We at Talinor value realism, and the staff is a valid and usefull weapon, and should be allowed in dagorhir. However, just because you have two hands on your weapon, doesn't make it a powerful one If you have any questions at all on this, please take the time to email, I would be glad to help Bortas
