This page offers mint rarity estimates of Charles the Bald and Charles III reissues of CB's deniers, based on the number of known coins from each mint cited in Georges Depeyrot's Le Numeraire Carolingien, Paris 1993. This looks at known holdings by major museums and known collections. These numbers do not suggest the total number of coins in each category, just those catalogued in the collections reviewed. Hence, this is a suggestion of relative rather than absolute scarcity. Depeyrot cites higher numbers of coins than Morrison and Grundal, by mint, so his numbers are used. Depeyrot (p 75) offers a good discussion of denier production during the Carolingian era.

The ‘most common' column reflects numbers of the  most common type, whereas the ‘total' column reflects the most common and other, less common deniers from that mint. This does not make a distinction between Carlvs Rex types and Gratia D-I Rex types. The rank order is by the second column, total number of coins by mint, regardless of type.

This does not count immobilized coinage later than Charles III. For example, an immobilized coin from Charles the Bald from Fecamp is not included here. That coin is on the Fecamp page.

I'd be interested if anyone seeing this has a better way of judging relative rarity.

* I suggest LeMans over Melle since so many of the Melle coins were immobilized long after the deaths of any of the Emperor Charles.
