Quentovic (10th C immobilized after 950)

For a larger image click here

AR denier, 20mm, 1.19gr. Obv: +---IA D-I REX, central H-LS monogram. Rev illegible but possibly: CVVENTOVVICI, central cross with besants in quadrants 2 and 3. Mint is Quentovic. MEC 998 describes this coin and cites MG 718, which is a denier if Charles le Chauve. Dumas 6051 - 6323 covers many varieties of this coin with ---IA D-I REX. 6085-6099 and 6161-6185 cite an H rather than K in the monogram. By weight this falls in the range for both groups. The first group ranges from 1.3gr to 1.09gr and has an average dimension of 20.5mm. The second group ranges from 1.3 to 1.1 grams and is identified as a large flan coin. The first group is pictured with an annulet and a besant whereas 6172 in the second group is pictured, I think, with two besants, but a smaller cross. Best estimate - from one of these groups after 950.

(for a larger image of this coin, click here)

AR denier, 22mm, 1.57gr. Obv: +SENONES SCV, central cross. Rev: central +, with smaller + above and below, no legend. Mint is Sens. R4456; Dep 934v (1 example); PdA CXXXVII#10 which is linked to 5907 (CIVITAS) but is closer to 5910-15. He notes "La date d'emission des premieres pieces (in this series) peut etre placee a la fin du Xe siciele. Quant aux grand deniers, ils appartiennent incontestablement au commencement du XIe." He cites weights for his reference numbers 5912-15 as 1.52 or 1.47 grams. MG-; Prou-: MEC-. Dumas 6762 found one of these Sens coins in the Fecamp hoard. Its weight was 1.455. Dumas dates this type of coinage dates from 970s, continuing into the 11th century. It shares the absence of a reverse legend with Auxerre, also dating from the 10th C. This particular coin weighs at the high end of PdA's coins and above that from Fecamp. Stylistically it dates from the 10th century although the exact date of this coin is uncertain.

Abbots of Medard

AR denier, 20mm, 1.27gr. Obv: SCI MEDARDI CAPAT, central head right. Rev: Legend unclear, central design. Mint is Medard in Soissons. R4962v (10th and 11th C); Boud 1900v (CAPVT); PdA 6513 CLI-24. He writes a long critique of another cataloguer who said this was a modern imitation without suggesting a date. Dumas -. Roberts is the only source that puts this in the 10th C (and into the 11th). Given the style of the head and comparing it to early similar coins from Blois, this is quite possible. Similar coins are not in Fecamp. If 10th C, it is late 10th.

AR denier, 20mm, .93g. Obv: PETVS EPICOPVS, central monogram. +TRECAS CIVITAS, central cross with a small + in one quadrant. Mint is Troyes. Reign dates are from Grand Larousse Encyclopedia (GLE). R4155v (slight variation in both obv. and rev. legends); Boud 1744; PdA 5946 (as billon).

Life and Times from the GLE: In 1102 he accompanied HRE Henry IV on an expedition against Robert II, comte de Flandre. He was a crusader and was in Palestine in 1113, 1121 and 1125. He was a knight Templar. For some reason he disinherited his son Eudes. At Hugues death, Troyes was passed on to Thibaud II of Champagne, whose coin is below.

Thibaut II The Great (1125-52) Provins and Sens
Count of Champagne

For a larger image click here

AR denier, 20mm, 1.02gr. Obv: +TEBALT COMES, central cross, opposing besants in quadrants 1 and 3, other symbols in quadrants 2 and 4. Rev: CASTRI PRVVINS, central line indicating a field over a comb. Provins is just outside the Burgundian sphere of influence, in Champagne. The field (champ) and comb (peigne) is a visual pun on the name of the region. R4726, Boudeau 1759, not in Bel.

He was son of Stephen (of Blois) and Adela. He married Matilda of Carinthia and they had seven children. Two of his sons married daughters of Louis VII (Henry and Thibaut V) while a daughter, Mary, married Hugh III of Burgundy. This established alliances with the major houses on his borders. He was succeeded first by Henry and then by another son, Thibaud V.

When Thibaut inherited Troyes and Meaux he decided to move there from the family home in Blois. This was in part because the territory was also coveted by Louis VI, and Thibaut felt it was necessary to be on site to protect his interests. The domains were a hodgepodge of lands held in fief of the king, duc of Burgundy and the HRE. His reign was characterized by administrative efficiency and successful use of the rights of coinage. He and his heirs benefited from the famous Champagne fairs that brought prosperity to this part of France. For a look at Provins today see Provins. Thibaut offered homage to Eudes II of Burgundy (father of Hugh III) in a way that recognized overlordship but did not owe any real duties like military support. From Burgundy's point of view, this preserved their claim to Troyes. Source: Dunbabin 308, 312-5
