AR dirham. The descritption is from Alex Akin "This silver dirham of the Spanish Umayyad ruler ‘Abd al-Rahman II (822-852 AD), was struck at al-Andalus ("Andalusia," specifically Cordoba) in 235 AH (850 AD). The Umayyads of Spain were descended from an Umayyad scion who escaped the Abbasid revolution and set up a competing state in Spain. Spain was thenceforth ruled by Muslims for several centuries, a period of mostly peaceful coexistence between the Muslim, Christian and Jewish populations. Abd al-Rahman II attempted to extend his power into France, reaching as far as Narbonne in 841, but he is probably remembered more for ruling Spain in relative peace and dramatic prosperity for three decades. This coin is type #342 in Album's Checklist of Islamic Coins, andis similar in size to a US quarter, but thinner. Note the two slots on this example: many coins of the Umayyads of Spain had a strip of silver inserted into these slots to raise their weight (perhaps to make up for metal lost by clipping). It is difficult to find one that still has the extra piece of silver attached between the slots."

AR dirham. The description is from Alex Akin "This silver dirham of the Spanish Umayyad ruler Muhammad I (852-886 AD) was struck at al-Andalus ("Andalusia," specifically Cordoba) in 248 AH (862 AD). Muhammad I was a son of Ad al-Rahman II but took power in a sort of coup, as his father had not chosen a successor before his death. This coin is type #343 in Album's Checklist of Islamic Coins, and is similar in size to a US quarter, but thinner. Part of the edge was clipped in antiquity."
