Cincinnati (left)
Johan Barthold Jongkind, The Seine, 1864 (right). This view is from the Left Bank looking east at Notre Dame. Today this is a view from the 6th arrondissement. The image is from a history of Paris in paintings edited by Georges Duby.
Jacques Offenbach's comic opera, Le Belle Hellene, is a triumph at the Theatres des Varietes. This theatre comes to play a central role in Emile Zola's Nana, not yet written.
Corot paints Souvenier de Mortefontaine.
This
is a sketch of the facade of musee Jacquemart Andre, built between 1864
and 1875. It is built by Edouard Andre and his wife Nelie Jacquemart to
house their art collection. It is on the Blvd. Haussmann. This is a fascinating
building. When they are at home by themselves it looked like a typical
rich later 19th century home, although on a grander scale. When they entertain,
which is often, the ground floor walls can be lowered into the basement
so the entire interior becomes a grand ballroom. Nelie ultimately will
give the house and their art collection to the Institut de France. Today
it houses a permanent collection as well as traveling shows. There is also
a delightful restaurant for a lunch break if you are in the neighborhood.
The sketch is from Poisson,
Paris Buildings and Monuments.
The parc Buttes Chaumont is laid out. This is in the 19th arrondissement, in the north of Paris. Creating the park involved sculpting cliffs to give it its modern shape. (AF)

Vercingetorix was a tribal leader who fought the Romans. His army was defeated
