First use of reinforced concrete in the construction of a Parisian building, at 1 rue Danton. This is in the 6th arrondissement and runs from place St. Michel just south of rue St. Andres des Arts. It is interesting that this was invented in 1867 and took so long to find its way into actual construction. (AF)

The Paris residence of the prince of Sagan on the rue de Berri is dynamited by the anarchist Ravachol. He also attacks a residence on blvd. St. Germain. He is finally arrested in a restaurant  (Restaurant Very, 22 blvd. Magenta, 10th arrondissement, near the gare du Nord), which is itself bombed by anarchist sympathizers. Two are killed and many injured.

In September there is a celebration for the centennial of the proclamation of the Republic in 1792. The Pantheon is the site of this event. (AF)

Zola publishes La Debacle, set in 1870 and 1871. It deals with the events of the Franco-Prussian War and the Commune.

At the parc Montsouris the first weather balloons are sent up. (AF)

A League (organization) is formed to attack the medical problem of cancer. (AF) The Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa and many others are indirect descendants of this effort.

Child labor laws limit work for children under 13, and limit it to 10 hours per day for those up to 16. Then for those older 11 hours for females and 12 hours for males. (CHF)

The concept of a general tariff to protect agriculture is proposed. The protection of agriculture remains a key concern of the French government (and other governments) today. (CHF)

The US conquers Panama. (CHF)

Pierre de Courbertin proposes the revival of the Olympics. This renewal is held in Athens in 1896. (AF)
