The first basketball game is played in Paris, at the Christian Union. (AF)

Outside Paris, at Giverny, Monet creates his water garden, where he'll paint the water lilly series. This is done by diverting a small stream to fill in an area where he can structure the plantings as he wants.

Student protests and barricades in the Latin Quarter. This is an area not renovated by Hausmann, lending itself more to street blockages than the area of the Grand Boulevards on the Right Bank. (AF)

Along with the automobile comes the drivers license, created by the prefect of Police in Paris. It was called "certificat de capacite permettant d'ere employe en qualitie de conducteur a moteur." (AF)

The anarchist Auguste Vaillant throws a bomb in the Chamber of Deputies, hurting more than 40 people. He was captured, condemned to death and executed by the guillotine in 1894. The image, from Almanach Francais, shows the explosion.

There is a Gauguin exhibition at Gallerie Durant-Ruel in Paris.
