These pages are intended to give a year by year look at Paris from 1860 - 1899. These were the years that Paris was rebuilt as the beautiful city we know today, the years it was restructured to support a growing middle class and the years the Impressionists flourished. Entries are a combination of art, some simple chronologies (factoids one might say) and some discussion, on occasion, of events. The emphasis is on culture and technology rather than political events. The pages are minimally numismatic, in spite of being linked to a numismatic site.
Coin images are courtesy of CGB
and many, but not all the art images, are from Mark Harden's Artchive.
The two main chronologies used are Almanach des Francais (AF) and
Chronologie
de l'Histoire de France (CHF). There is often a one year inconsistency
in dates between the two annals, and I have generally used the first appearance
of an event.
