married
Charles de Blois
Arthur II
had two marriages. By his first wife, Mary of Limoge, he had two sons,
John III and Guy. John III was his heir. By his second marriage he had
one son, also named Jean, who married Jeanne of Flanders.
Jean III had no son and designated
his brother Guy as his heir. Inconveniently for the Bretons, Guy
predeceased Jean III. Guy did have a daughter, Jeanne of Dreux. This
Jeanne married Charles of Blois.
When Jean III died in 1341, there were two claimants to the
duchy. Charles of Blois claimed it as a right by marriage to Jeanne,
daughter of Guy. Jean III's half brother Jean de Montfort also claimed
it as a right of mail descent from Arthur II.
Jean de Montfort died in 1345 and
left a young son, Jean de Montfort. His mother Jeanne of Flanders
carried on the claim, and war, in the name of her son.
Blois became a French client in the conflict while Jean de Montfort became an English claimant.
